The Trinidad & Tobago men’s football team preparing for their opening 2022 World Cup Qualifier against Guyana on Thursday was dealt a severe blow after one of their players tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday night in Dominican Republic.
The news was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon following a media release from the Trinidad & Tobago Football Association Media. However, due to privacy of the situation, the player was not named.
The release stated, “Following the latest set of Covid 19 PCR testing for all members of the Men’s National Team contingent in Santo Domingo, there was a positive result for a player on the night of Tuesday March 23rd, 2021.”
It continued, “The individual tested positive and was immediately isolated at the team’s hotel. All Covid 19 protocols are being followed and he is presently awaiting a retest for confirmation purposes.”
The release concluded, “Strict contact tracing was then performed and all primary contacts have been quarantined, they would then be tested accordingly following the player’s retest results. The player is asymptomatic at this time. The TTFA also respects the confidentiality wishes of the player.”
The Soca Warriors will open their campaign against Guyana on Thursday, 7pm at the Pan American Stadium, San Cristobal, Dominican Republic followed by Puerto Rico on March 28th in Puerto Rico.
